The Saratoga Racers, the area's new professional basketball team are ready to open their season this weekend. The Racers will host another expansion team, the Connecticut Flyeerz Sunday at Saratoga Central Catholic High School on Broadway in Saratoga. Tip-off is at 1 pm. Tickets are $10.
The Racers have been preparing for the 2024-2025 season since last spring. Tryout camps were held in April and June. The team played in the well-known BoCat Summer League in Watervliet, which Racer’s coach Bob Catherwood runs. Training camp for the team began in September.
The Racers played two exhibition games during the summer against the Bennington Martens. Saratoga recently played a series of exhibition games against Redemption, Columbia-Greene, Word of Life, Albany Pharmacy, and the Hoosac School to tune up for the season.
“We’ve been using these scrimmages to see where we’re at, what we need to work on and to build chemistry among our players,” team owner Keith Harrington said.
Saratoga’s roster includes former local high school and college players, many of whom have professional experience with other teams.
“Several of our players have played in the ABA with either Bennington or Albany so we have quite a bit of experience,” Harrington added. “We have two former league all-stars on our roster. But we also have some exciting rookies.”
Catherwood’s mantra is “Run, gun, and have fun,” so fans can expect the Racers to play a high-flying uptempo style of basketball.
“I would like to invite all my friends from the area to come out Sunday and check out our product. Pro basketball for $10? You can’t beat it,” Harrington said. “The Racers will do everything they can to keep you entertained. It will be a fun family afternoon out.”
